About the road
The C2C is the UK's most popular long-distance cycle route. This version starts at the harbour in Whitehaven, climbs over Whinlatter into the Lake District to Keswick, and crosses the Eden valley to Penrith. Then comes the real work: the long climb to Hartside, and the North Pennines through Alston, Nenthead, Allenheads and Rookhope, the highest roads on the route. From Consett it runs down old railway lines to Sunderland and the North Sea.
This road follows the C2C through its towns. OpenStreetMap only has the signed route in pieces, so in places it takes a more direct road than the signs do, and it comes out shorter than the signed route's 219 km.
Most people ride it in three or four days. On a trainer you can take as long as you like.
Also known as Sea to Sea, C2C cycle route, Whitehaven to Sunderland.
How to ride it on your trainer
- Open longvoie in Chrome or Edge on a laptop or desktop. It is free: an email and a code to sign in, no password, no card.
- Connect your trainer: any smart trainer that speaks FTMS (Wahoo, Tacx, Elite…), or a power meter, and a heart-rate strap if you have one. No trainer yet? Ride on the keys.
- Pick C2C. longvoie sets your trainer's resistance as the road climbs and eases it as it falls, and you ride it in 3D, on the real street.
- Stop whenever you like. Your next ride starts from the metre you stopped at.
